"Great choice!" 2010-05-02
By R. Shaffer (Orange County, CA)
As many have done in looking for just the right camera, I read everything I could find and tried out a number of DSLRs over the course of several weeks. I had certain criteria that I needed in a camera: outstanding picture quality, good low light performance, comfortable to hold, large viewfinder, a versatile kit lens, ease of use and a price of about $1,000 or less (if possible). I quickly discovered that many of the entry level models lacked one or more of these features, but the D90 (for me anyways) had all of what I was looking for. The picture quality is terrific, even though I know a good photographer can take great pictures with a lesser camera, the D90 has many features that make those of us who aren't as good as a professional much easier to get good pictures. The low light performance is amazing. The grip is quite comfortable as is the viewfinder (particularly with my eyeglasses). The range of the kit lens (18-105)is very versatile and it's a great all around lens that is very sharp at both ends and not terribly heavy either. All this at the magic price of about $1,000 made the D90 and great choice for me.

"A great camera" 2010-05-02

Simple a great camera,a little bit heavy when you travel, but not as bad as D300. Strong recommend it. Please see some of the pictures taken with camera.

"Love my new Nikon" 2010-04-18
By Antonio Ponce (Chino, CA, US)
Ordered my Nikon D90 in December 2009 and got it in a little over a week. Received it with no problems. I have shot maybe a little more than a thousand photos with it and it is sweet. I have 2 Nikon 35mm slrs and used them for many, many years. I bought many optics for them as well as many accessories (ext tubes etc.). I wanted a dslr that I could use many, if not all, of the accessories I already had. The D90 fills the bill. The camera came with the 18-105 lens. All my photos are sharp and clear. If any are blurry it's my fault not the camera's or the lens fault. I ordered a 8 gig transcend sd card with the camera and have not had any issues with it. Later I saw a Lexar 4 gig sd card on sale and it has worked well also. I haven't tried the high speed sd cards yet. Maybe later. These work and work well so why spend more money?

After reading many of the reviews, I must admit, I was a little fearful that I would have problems. So far nothing. No error messages, no nothing. It works and keeps on working. In cold weather and not so cold ( I live in so cal and have shot in the snow in the mountains and in the 80's in my back yard, yes and it's not summer yet). The camera has a learning curve. It has many options and it takes a while to learn how to use them. It can be used as a point and shot camera but only if you set it up that way. Learn to use it and use it correctly and it can be a valuable tool. I'm still learning. As far as the lens goes I have no complaints. It's sharp (for my purposes)and as far as the plastic lens mount is concerned, no worries. I'm not a pro. I use my camera maybe 5 or 6 times a week. 95% of the time I leave the lens on. The range of the lens is the one used for most of my pictures (family, vacation etc). I have a 600mm mirror, a 105mm nikor that I use sometimes. These lenses are the ones for my 35mm Nikons. They work on the D90 in manual mode. So I'm not changing the lens every 5 minutes. I don't think the plastic lens mount will be a factor.

This camera isn't cheap. I works well and I'm happy with it. If you have some Nikon equip in 35mm and don't want to spend more, this is the camera for you. If you want a good prosumer camera this could be the camera for you. Check out the Canons and the others and if possible hold them and use them. See how they feel in your hands and look through the view finder. They're all good. Buy the one fits you.

"Exccellent Digital SLR Camera!" 2010-04-17
By E. Reed (Memphis, TN)
This is my first jump from a point and shoot to a digital SLR camera. I'm still learning how to use, but even using it on auto settings produces clear, crisp, beautiful pictures. It makes taking pictures fun! It is a little bulky and heavy so I reserve it for special occasions. My only complaint is that it's not very user friendly for a novice photog as myself. However, if you're more knowledgable in photo taking, then this is the camera for you. I've ordered the Nikon D90 for Dummies to hopefully improve my photo taking skills.

"Loved my D90. Now I have the 7D but miss the D90" 2010-04-15
By J. S
I may have been a Nikon Fanboy and didnt know it. I had a D90 for about a year and loved it. Had a 50mm, 18-200mm and that was all i really needed. The picture it took was amazing. Very clear and very sharp.

But then I heard about the 7D and had to have the video features. Well the 7D is a very nice camera and I feel like the build quality is about the same between the two. People tell me the 7d is in a different league but I'm not sure about that. My Nikon was sharper. And I have had shots that I took the same exact shot with same exact settings between the two and I just feel like the D90 is sharper. I know i'm crazy.

Video is not really comparable. 7D has amazing video 1080 thats all there is to it. The nikons video wasnt terrible. But you really couldnt move around much due to the jello effect and thats not there at all on the 7D.

Hope that helped. Sorry if it didnt.

"Horrible customer service, good pics if you don't have spots in the picture" 2010-05-01
By Namaste
My dad bought me a Nikon D3000 for Christmas 2009. I got it in January 2010. By March it was showing a blackish/brown spot in all of my pictures!!!! I spent almost $20 to send it to Nikon, with the understanding that there is a one year warranty on it. Fine, ok, I guess. I didn't hear back from them. The tracking code said it had arrived, but still didn't hear from them. I called and they showed nothing in their computer on it. Called back a week later...finally it was showing, along with a bill to charge me $171.47 to fix it!!!! It was only a few months old!! That is so screwed! They won't take money orders, only credit cards and checks. Our cards are full and we don't have checks. I asked how I was supposed to pay for it and they repeated "check or credit card". I don't have the money to pay it in one payment, it would have to be payments. But how?

So they said I have 45 days to pay for it or they ship it back. 45 days from a date that they put out there, and didn't tell me about it til I got a letter telling me, a week later. Ugh!

Now I have to figure out how to pay $171 bucks, in 45 days, or get back a defective camera that puts spots on everything! I will never buy another NIKON. Should have gotten a Canon. I have tried Canon, Fuji and Sony and I've never had problems with spots on the lens or pictures.

My daughter has an HP laptop she bought in August and a few months later the screen went out. They shipped her a box, post paid, fixed it, retained all her info on it and had it back to her within a WEEK! Now that is service!! NIKON should take lessons because I have read other negative reviews of NIKON's ways of handling their product. If it says NIKON ON IT, THEY SHOULD FIX IT FREE AT LEAST FOR A YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!

I also want to note that my dad bought a D90 and his is not focusing when it takes video. NIKON actually tried to convince him he had to manually focus the camera as he is filming, even though it did at first. I call BS! I don't know what he's going to do either. GRRRRRR!!!

"Just took my breath away..." 2010-04-30
By Geoff Puterbaugh (Chiang Mai, T. Suthep, A. Muang Thailand)
I am an amateur photographer, at best. I used to have the Nikon D40X, but it disappeared in the hands of a thief. So I saved my pennies for a while, and finally I went out and bought this Nikon D3000.

It is startlingly good. I'm not sure what, exactly, the Genies of Nikon have been up to, but this camera is a hell of a lot better than the D40X, and the D40X was a hell of a good camera!

If you are looking through the reviews here, the most interesting review (for me) was the one by the guy who bought the Nikon, disliked it, traded it in on a Canon, and came out preferring the Nikon he had originally rejected. Why? Well, he said something almost mystical: the Nikon pictures were more "involving" --- they invited the viewer into the scene.

I've found the same to be true with my Nikons. People will say, "Great picture!" and I'll be thinking "It's just a picture from my Nikon."

A fantastic camera! Everyone who works at Nikon deserves a glass of champagne! :-)

"Worst Nikon DSLR? yes. Cheapest one? also yes" 2010-04-29
By R. Barrios Arias (San Salvador, El Salvador)
I bought this camera after taking in consideration all the other brands in the same entry level DSLRs

ill resume the pros and cons of the camera.

Pros:

-Very cheap

-great lens in the kit

-great picture quality

-Fast focus

-Small

Cons:

-NOISE is nasty after ISO 400, afecting lowlight conditions capabilities, which is one of the main reasons

you buy a DSLR.

-Lack of bracketing for HDR pictures

-LCD screen is the worst ive ever seen

-Max shutter speed with flash is 1/200, too slow for fast action photos.

in conclusion is a great entry level camera witha great price, but have a lot of sad flaws like the very bad LCD, leaving you blind to evaluate the pictures you are taking (mostly with low light).

"DSLR convert" 2010-04-25
By Paul T. Deegan (Denver, CO)
I bought this camera to give to my wife for her birthday. She's an avid SLR hobbiest and although she's no professional, she knows and applies more than basics to her shots. I wanted to get her a camera that would allow her to do everything she knows how to do, but not be intimidating in control and features. I looked between the Nikon and Canon and eventually went with the Nikon because it had about the same features with a better price. If I was more concerned about upgradeability I probably would have purchased the Canon. The 18-55mm zoom lens is extremely versatile and the features are great. It basically shoots instantaneously when you hit the button, and the three shots per second work fantastic. Overall it has been everything we wanted in a camera, and the results speak for themselves, she has shots that look professional (she says it was all the camera). A nice bonus is that even for its size, it's fairly light weight. I would reccomend this camera for any hobbiest looking for a good digital camera and you don't need video.

"Great Starter DSLR" 2010-04-15
By T. Hoffman
This camera is amazing. Has a ton of manual features but also full auto. Autofocus is fast and quiet, but the kit lens is not a sufficient lens. I will be buying an 18-200mm lens to get a good all round lens. Picture quality is amazing, feels great in your hands. Definately the best starter DSLR on the market for the features and money.
